Gillingham manager Martin Allen is undecided who will lead the side out for the coming season despite Charlie Lee wearing the captain’s armband at the weekend.
Lee lead the side put at Dartford on Saturday, fuelling speculation that he would be given the job on a permanent basis for the coming season, but Martin Allen was quick to suggest that might not be the case.
Speaking to KSN after the game, Allen insisted there was nothing to be taken from Lee being named captain for that game:
“We haven’t picked a captain and he was by the door, so I give him it. I still think we’ve got some players to come in and
hopefully they’ll be strong characters and personalities to help our team.”
“Perhaps they will come into consideration for that job, but I haven’t got those players in yet that we need and that I’d
like.”
That suggests there could well be someone else that is Allen’s shortlist that might be suited for the job.
Last season it was Andy Frampton that wore the skipper’s armband when fit. In his absence, others took on the role including Danny Kedwell and Danny Jackman.
The role of captain of the side is an important one for Allen and whoever he decides on, it won’t be a decision taken quite so lightly as it was at Dartford.
